Support Cindy Sheehan!

August 09, 2005

Cindy Sheehan, Vacaville, California, mother of Specialist Casey Sheehan, killed in action in Iraq on April 4, 2004 in an ambush, is camped outside George W. Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch. Google her name and you'll get 227,000 results for your reading pleasure. This New York Times article will be a good start on the news media phenomena that she's stirred up.

Cindy is merely asking Bush to meet with her to answer some of her questions about the war in Iraq, a request that he so far has refused. I interviewed Cindy in August 2004 for a column that ran in the Asheville Citizen-Times. Below is a portion of that interview.
-------------------------------------------------
When we met with President Bush after Casey's death, our family decided we wanted to tell him what an amazing person Casey was. So we took pictures of Casey when he was a baby and when he was in the Army. We just wanted to honor Casey's memory. I did tell President Bush how awful it is to have a child die, and he said, "I can't imagine your pain." And I said, "I think you might be able to imagine it a little bit. You have children. Just think of what would happen if one of your daughters died." Then I said, "Trust me, Mr. President, you don't want to go there." And he said, "You're right; I don't."

I think he (Bush) rushed into this war before he had all of the information. I believe that this (the invasion of Iraq) had been planned before 9/11. And when 9/11 came, this administration saw it as an opportunity to invade Iraq. But I don't think they had any plans for the occupation. And that's when my son was killed--two weeks after his arrival in Iraq--by the followers of Muqtada al Sadr.

Parents with kids over there need to start talking to their senators and congressmen about getting the VA (Veterans Administration) better funded for when their children come home. The ones who come home are going to be wounded mentally and emotionally. They're seeing a lot of things that are really affecting them. There are going to be thousands coming back from this war that are going to need lots of counseling and support.
-------------------------------------------------
Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?
The torrential rains of a mother's weeping will never be done
They call him a hero, you should be glad that he's one, but
Have you ever heard the sound of a mother screaming for her son?

--From a poem by Carly Sheehan, Casey's sister

Cindy is one fine strong and intelligent woman and mother. She is what makes me proud to be American! Not only does she say what she thinks -- and feels -- but she is willing to put her money where her mouth is. What a rare bird she is, during our current troubled times. Should
GW Bush make the error of having her arrested, be sure to contribute to Cindy's legal fund. An alternative would be to go to www.Crawfordpeacehouse.org to find other ways to help Cindy and those who are standing with her in Texas. Peace and End the Occupation of Iraq and Bring our troops home -- that's the best way to support them! No more deaths for Oil and Corporate Greed and Dismal Ignorant Right-Wing Politics!

The beat goes on. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Ain't nothin' new under the sun. Law of cause and effect. Sorry he died.

She spoke at the Asheville rally this past March bringing tears to more eyes than mine, I'm sure. Afterward, people lined up to hug her. I stood to the side with my sign reading "Military Mom For Peace". When the line ended, she noticed me, looked at my sign and, with a catch in her voice said, "...and yours?". I think I threw myself into her arms, tearfully mumbling that he survived, feeling absolutely terrible that he did while hers didn't. It was a long emotional hug. Then she turned to the waiting microphones of reporters.

If I only had money for airfare I would take time from my new job and sit with her in Crawford. I would love to be there in the event that Bush actually came to talk. I know that he won't because he knows he cannot stand up to her and the pain of thousands of others much like her. She would tear him to pieces in front of the media without even raising her voice.

Excerpt:

"The great danger facing us today is not so much the atomic bomb that was created by physical science. Not so much that atomic bomb that you can put in an aeroplane and drop on the heads of hundreds and thousands of people as dangerous as that is. But the real danger confronting civilization today is that atomic bomb which lies in the hearts and souls of men, capable of exploding into the vilest of hate and into the most damaging selfishness that's the atomic bomb that we've got to fear today. Problem is with the men. Within the heart and the souls of men. That is the real basis of our problem."

I feel the same way about Cindy. I just decided today to make a sign -"Honk for Cindy Sheehan" and join a local group holding sign vigils on
a bridge here in Maine every Sunday at noon. Her energy is galvanizing the peace movement.
